Paramedic Original Program

The Paramedic Profession

Paramedics are health professionals who treat a wide variety of patients in advanced life support. The Paramedics mostly work in the pre-hospital settings so in essence the Emergency Room Department is brought to the patient either at home, work or any public setting. Paramedics are highly trained in advanced life support and in the pre-hospital setting; the Paramedic is the highest level of medical care provider.

The only other health care profession who has a higher heath care status in the pre-hospital setting is a Physician. The fact is the Paramedic is in charge of all patient care in the pre-hospital setting. Paramedic's work under a wide variety of standing orders, so emergency treatment is available very quickly to the patient. Many, many lives are saved because of the Paramedic. It is a profession to be very proud to be a part of. There is a lot of satisfaction knowing that with the grace of GOD death has to wait another day.

Overview of the Paramedic Program

Our CAAHEP Accredited Paramedic Program is a rigorous 12 months of extensive didactic and clinical training in Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine. The course consists of 1302.5 hours divided into didactic, lab session, clinical rotation, and field experience and field internship.

The lecturers are Physicians who are trained in Emergency Medicine and some of them still maintain their NYS Paramedic certification, Nurse Practitioners, Paramedics and specialty lecturers so that the lectures mirror Medical School teachings. The labs are done at the school to make the student proficient in the various skills the Paramedic needs to know.

The students take the skills learned and do Seventy (70) 8-hour clinical rotations to master the skills. The clinical rotations are done on ALS Ambulance, Trauma ED, Adult ED, Pediatric ED, Phlebotomy lab, Anesthesia/Operating Room, ICU, CCU, Labor and Delivery, Medical Examiners Office and Psychiatry.

The 560 hours of clinical rotations are separate from your labs and didactic work. As you can see the student must be committed to this program. Once the program is finished, the student can be happy knowing the knowledge they received was well worth the effort.

Once you have completed the NYS Paramedic Program the student will sit for the New York State Certifying exam. This certification is good for 3 years. After 3 years, the Paramedic certification will expire. The Paramedic must take a Paramedic Refresher course before the 3 year time frame, usually the Paramedic will take a refresher about 6 months before they expire to assure they are always current. If you wish to work in New York City, the student after passing the state exam will have to take a REMAC exam, which is a two-part exam. Part one is a written exam and part two is an oral exam which a Physician trained in Emergency Medicine or a senior NYC EMS paramedic Instructor Coordinator test you on protocols standardized by New York City REMAC. This certificate is also good for 3 years and must be recertified too.

***The Paramedic Program follows the New York State Department of Health Guidelines***

The student must pass a qualifying written exam consisting of EMT knowledge, Math and Reading comprehension as well as an oral interview to be accepted to the Paramedic Program.

Technical Standards

Paramedics are required to perform a wide variety of Emergencies Medical Techniques in order to help the sick and injured, in which they ultimately save lives. Students must be able to tolerate taxing workloads and changing environments.

Observation

Candidates at the end of the program should be able to notice if a scene is safe to enter. Be able to look at a patient and get a general impression of the patient's condition. Know how to size up a scene and understand what the mechanism of injury is before patient contact.

Communication

Paramedics must be able to communicate with a patient and their families in a caring compassionate manner. The Paramedic must also be able to communicate with other health care workers in a professional manner. Effective communicating whether verbal or non-verbal is very important in the Paramedic career.

Physical Demands

Aptitudes required for work of this nature are good physical stamina, endurance, and body condition that would not be adversely affected by frequently having to walk, stand, lift, carry, and balance at times, in excess of 125 pounds. Motor coordination is necessary because over uneven terrain, the patient's, the Paramedic's, and other workers' well being must not be jeopardized.

Admission Policy

The Emergency Medical Service Institute Paramedic Program does not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, national origin, religion, age, political beliefs, handicap, or any other factor, in its employment practices or in its policies relating to recruitment of students. We do reserve the right to revise tuition and fees without prior notice if it becomes necessary.

Requirements for admission:

    Be a current NYS EMT.

Have either a High School diploma or a NYS recognized GED.

Pass the written and oral qualifying exam.

The Paramedic Refresher Program / Challenge Refresher Program

The paramedic refresher program is for students whose EMT-P certification is about expire. The EMT-P certification is good for three years. The paramedic refresher program course is designed to review skills and didactic information to prepare the student for the New York State Written and practical Exams.

The paramedic challenge refresher program uses both written and practical examinations to uncover areas of weakness in didactic knowledge and practical skill proficiency. The student will only be required to attend the sessions that are mandatory and the sessions related to the topics that student's demonstrated weakness in. As an example, if the student did not do well in the Medical Emergencies section of the examination and they were unsuccessful at the Patient Assessment station the student would be required to attend the lecture and skills session.

If the student successfully completes all their skills during initial testing, they have met the requirements for New York State Skills examination. If the student fails one or two skill stations the student will only be required to attend the lab practice for those skills. The student will then retest on the failed skills. If the student fails more than two skill stations, they will be required to attend all skill lab sessions and retest on all the skill stations.

Student's currently working for any NYS EMS agency is eligible for NYS voucher reimbursement for the Paramedic Refresher only.
